HISTORY OF THE N.S.W.R.C.R.C.C inc 1977-1994

The N.S.W.R.C.R.C.C inc was formed in 1977/8 and was the first club specifically for radio controlled car racing in N.S.W. as well as one of the first in Australia. The founding members of the club originally raced at the first ever purpose built track in Australia built at the S.S.M.E Model Park at Ludenham. This group included such people as John Morgan, Peter Ferry, John Howard and of course the Chan Clan of Tom, Ray, Peter and Ki Cheung.

The S.S.M.E circuit was built in about 1974/75 and was based on the Mount Panorama circuit. However by 1977 this track had fallen into disrepair and several of the racers fed up with the politics and lack of action from the S.S.M.E. Club in regards to a new circuit branched out to find a new spot.

The eventual outcome of this was a circuit at Moorebank, on Army land, (where the suburb of Wattle Grove is now) that was a very rough old affair, however this site went on to serve the club well. The major problem at the Moorebank site was vandalism meaning that nothing could be left standing between race meetings. In fact in the early days of racing at Moorebank, when only a very small drivers stand was available (approximately 60 cm of the ground) and drivers used to pit for themselves, it was not uncommon for the stand to topple over when the panicked driver jumped back on, after his "quick" fuelstop. This of course caused much carnage on the track.

By early 1981 the club owned a proper drivers stand (the same construction as the one used at the current Mt Druitt Club) and the racing was becoming a little more organised. The biggest problem was having to erect the track, i.e: the drivers stand had to be constructed, barriers put in place, star iron safety fence erected and about 100 old car tyres placed around the circuit, all before any racing could take place. (Imagine if this had to be done today no racing would ever take place!), and of course, even more importantly it all had to be pulled down and packed away before anyone could go home (no disappearing in those days once your race finished.)

In 1982 the N.S.W club held its first State Title event at the Moorebank circuit. A great deal of hard work was put in by the club members to fill all the rough spots and generally make the track look more professional. This meeting is always looked on with fond memories by those involved as the track and the surrounds ended up looking very spectacular with an excellent crowd in attendance. In fact this meeting was the first time that now long time club member Steven Burgess saw the cars run and was the trigger for many new people to begin racing model cars.
